Reading Comprehension

Пример задания:

It has long been recognized that English is one language with two major national dialects: British and American. Of the two, British English has enjoyed a reputation as being the more correct and prestigious dialect. This reputation is based on two claims: Britain is the geographic area where English developed, and British English is “purer” than American English. About the first claim there can be little argument; however, all evidence points to the contrary of the second claim: in grammar, pronunciation, and, to a lesser extent, vocabulary, American English is closer than British English to the language spoken in England prior to the 18th century.

Linguists have noted the tendency of people to be linguistically conservative when isolated from their mother tongue. This phenomenon can be observed in the Icelanders’ retention of characteristics lost in other Scandinavian languages. The same is true of American English, as can be seen in the retention of the past participle “gotten,” abandoned in modern British English. Finally, if we accept the notion that the purest form of a language is that spoken by the upper classes, it is reasonable to assume that Americans had excellent speech models, for the greatest percentage of British immigrants to America were well-spoken members of the educated classes.

Even today American English resembles present standard British English more closely than it resembles any other of the local British dialects; the major difference, perhaps, lies only in the degree of purity.

The primary purpose of this passage is to

(A)  show the development of the English language since the 18th century

(B)  argue that American English is purer than British English

(C)  explain, by example, how people tend to be linguistically conservative when isolated from their mother country

(D)  outline the major dialectical differences between American English and British English

(E)  encourage the use of pure English by all English-speaking people

Ответ: (B)

Select a sentence in the passage in which the author provides a grammatical example to support the claim that American English is closer than modern British English to 18th-century British English.

Ответ: The same is true of American English, as can be seen in the retention of the past participle “gotten,” abandoned in modern British English.

Numeric Entry Questions

Enter your answer as an integer or a decimal if there is a single answer box OR as a fraction if there are two separate boxes — one for the numerator and one for the denominator.

Equivalent forms of the correct answer, such as 2.5 and 2.50, are all correct. Fractions do not need to be reduced to lowest terms, though you may need to reduce your fraction to fit in the boxes. Enter the exact answer unless the question asks you to round your answer.

If two different students are to be selected at random from the 100 students, what is the probability that both students selected will be students who transferred from two-year community colleges?

Give your answer as a fraction

Analytical Writing

Секция аналитического писма
2 задания (сочинения), 60 минут (30 минут на каждое сочинение)

Типы заданий:

  • Analyze an Issue

  • Analyze an Argument

Секция Analytical Writing определяет способность кандидата

  • артикулировать сложные идеи ясно и эффективно

  • анализировать утверждения и доказательства

  • поддерживать логически выдержанную дискуссию, сфокусированную на теме

  • применять на практике знания стандартного письменного английского языка

Analyze and Issue

Пример задания:

“Many assert that individuals allowed to work flexible schedules at home will be both more productive and happier than colleagues working under more traditional arrangements. Others assert that the close supervision of an office workplace is necessary to ensure productivity and quality control and to maintain morale.”

Which argument do you find more compelling, the case for flexible work conditions or the opposing viewpoint? Explain your position using relevant reasons or examples drawn from your own experience, observations, or reading.

Analyze and Argument

Пример задания:

Woven baskets characterized by a particular distinctive pattern have previously been found only in the immediate vicinity of the prehistoric village of Palea and therefore were believed to have been made only by the Palean people. Recently, however, archaeologists discovered such a "Palean" basket in Lithos, an ancient village across the Brim River from Palea. The Brim River is very deep and broad, and so the ancient Paleans could have crossed it only by boat, and no Palean boats have been found. Thus it follows that the so-called Palean baskets were not uniquely Palean.

Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
